The 2023 #OctoberIs4Livers campaign featured a series of 3 Liver Cancer Lessons. GLI’s Liver Cancers Program Director, Sarah Manes, was joined by experts who explored a range of topics related to palliative care, liver transplant and surgery, and liver health research – celebrating the milestones, highlighting the gaps, and discussing the future of liver health.

The #OctoberIs4Livers campaign features a Health Equity Roundtable series highlighting different underserved communities.
In 2022, the series focused on the liver cancer amond the Black/African Americans, Asian/Asian Americans, Hispanic and LatinX, and LGBTQIA+.
In 2024, this series focused on liver cancers care among the rural communities, American Indian and Indigenous People in Canada, and the U.S. veteran population. From liver health experts to community advocates, the panelists discussed risk factors, barriers, and screening of liver cancer unique to these communities while identifying action items necessary for advancing liver health equity.

Sara Van Geertruyden from Thorn Run Partners presented crucial policy updates following Global Liver Institutes A3 Hill Day, ensuring that all individuals stay informed. In her briefing, she covers a comprehensive range of important legislation, including acts such as the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA), the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act, the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA), and the Protect Health Care for All Patients Act. In the end, Sara emphasized the importance of reaching out to congressional representatives and provided viewers with Calls to Action to advocate for the passage of this vital legislation.
The State of Liver Cancer
Global Liver Institute (GLI), the Hepatitis B Foundation, NASH kNOWledge, and the Taiwan Hepatitis Information and Care Association (THICA) hosted a virtual October’s Liver Cancer Awareness Month Educational Briefing on The State of Liver Cancer in October. This event explored the challenges and opportunities surrounding liver cancer around the globe, with the goal of improving health equity for all patients going through their own liver cancer journey.
